Egyptian director Hala Khalil was born in Cairo in 1967.

After taking a few university classes in engineering, she dropped out of the program and joined the Cairo Film School where she graduated with a degree in film directing, and started working as both director and screenwriter.

Khalil belongs to the new generation of Egyptian female filmmakers whose work tends to focus on the everyday lives of Egyptian women and their separate identity from men.

Her award winning short The Kite (1997), and her critically praised feature films Best Times (2004) and Cut and Paste (2006) screened at numerous international film festivals and won several awards.
