Algeria, 1990s. Nedjma is an 18-year-old university student determined not to let the Algerian Civil War prevent her from enjoying young adulthood with her friends or pursuing her passion for fashion design. As terrorists push for a fundamentalist Islamic state and the social climate grows increasingly conservative, Nedjma puts together a fashion show in a defiant assertion of women’s rights to control their bodies, clothing, and lives. In her widely acclaimed debut film, director Mounia Meddor offers a piercing vision of female camaraderie and resilience.Nedjma, an 18 year-old student passionate about fashion design refuses to let the tragic events of the Algerian Civil War keep her from experiencing a normal life and going out at night with her friend Wassila. As the social climate becomes more conservative, she rejects the new bans set by the radicals and decides to fight for her freedom and independence by putting on a fashion show.
