Magdi Ahmed Ali / Mawlana
Magdi Ahmed Ali was born in Egypt in 1952. After graduating with a degree in Pharmacy in 1976, he decided this was not for him and changed course by enrolling in Cairo's Higher Institute of Cinema. Upon graduating in 1981 he worked as an assistant director on over 20 films including those by esteemed Egyptian directors Mohamad Khan (Factory Girl and Before the Summer Crowds -- ANA 2017) and Youssef Chahine (Alexandria... Why? and Adieu Bonaparte).
He produced three documentaries before moving on to features. His first film Ya Dunya Ya Gharami was released in 1996. It was followed by Hero (1997), A Girl's Secret (2001), Fawseya's Secret Recipe (2008) and The Nile Birds (2009), Mawlana is his 6th film.
