Merzak Allouache is an Algerian film director and screenwriter who has been directing films since 1976. He studied filmmaking at the National Film School in Algeria, then continued his studies in France.
His film Omar Gatlato (1976) won the Silver Prize at the 10th Moscow International Film Festival. Hi Cousin! (1996) was Algeria’s official submission to the Best Foreign Language category at the 69th Academy Awards. Normal! (2011) won Best Film at the 2011 Doha Tribeca Film Festival. In 2012 The Repentant was screened in the Directors' Fortnight in Cannes, and won the FIPRESCI Award for Best Asian Film at the 17th International Film Festival of Kerala. In 2013 The Rooftops premiered at the Venice Film Festival.
