NADINE LABAKI / CAPERNAUM
Born in 1974, Nadine is a Lebanese actress and film director. She began her career directing music videos for Arabic artists.
In 2007, Labaki co-wrote, directed, and starred in her feature-film debut, Caramel, which premiered at the Directors' Fortnight in Cannes. The film became a sensation at both film festivals and the box office, and garnered Labaki much acclaim as a director and an actress. It also got the attention of Hollywood, with Variety adding her to their ‘10 Directors to Look Out’ for List.
Her second movie, Where do We Go Now [ANA2013] a musical comedy-drama also premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard category in 2011, and won the Cadillac People’s Choice award at theToronto International Film Festival.
In late 2013, Nadine started work on her third feature Capernaum. The film which was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or and won the Jury Prize at Cannes 2018. She used mostly non-professional actors for this film, including lead child actor.
Capernaum was nominated in the foreign-language Oscars category, which was a first for a female director in 2019. Nadine is also the first female Arab director to ever be nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film
